Nas Pays IRS $3.5 Million
Reports have been out for years now that Nas owed money to the IRS, word in 2012 being that his back taxes amounted to a $6 million debt. At the time it was reported that the Internal Revenue Service has filed documents in Georgia to have the rapper’s wages collected—via the music publishing organizations BMI and ASCAP—until the debt was paid in full, and now, according to Bossip, it seems a resolution has been reached, Nas ponying up $3.5 million, the remainder of what is owed.
Documents obtained by the site detail the remaining back taxes, which spanned from 2006 to 2010. Though the large sum has been forked over, the site as well claims that Nas owes $426,000 to the state of Georgia for income earned in 2007. Nas rapped on the 2000 single “You Owe Me,” “Yeah, owe me back like you owe your tax,” and has a case of life imitating art here with word of his settlement.
He of course isn’t the first rapper to owe money to the IRS, with reports in November stating that Rick Ross owed $5.7 million for money earned from 2012 to 2014. “This issue arose from an incorrect filing by a prior accountant for the 2012 tax year,” Ross said in a statement. “My new team of accountants have corrected the prior filing, and as anyone who has dealt with the IRS understands, it is a process.”
In September meanwhile, fans came to Nelly’s rescue after it was reported that the rapper owed $2.4 million in back taxes, turning to streaming platforms to help him raise funds.
